Why The Atlanta Hawks Can’t Win A Championship

Another year and another early exit for the Atlanta Hawks from the playoffs. Last night, the Hawks lost Game 6 against the Boston Celtics in the first round. There are quite a few reasons that can be made as to why the Hawks lost this game and the series.

It’s almost like the Hawks, or most Atlanta teams for that matter, have bad luck. It didn’t help the team to have their owner, Michael Gearon Jr., calling Kevin Garnett a ‘dirty player.’

“We don’t get any calls, which I know everybody always hears,” he said, via the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “But I’ll give you a stat. Last night, we are playing this old, physical team. They are old. I know what happens when you play basketball, old guys foul. [Kevin] Garnett is the dirtiest guy in the league. We are playing Boston last night and they had two fouls the whole first half. We had five times that and we’re athletic.”

What Gearon Jr. doesn’t realize is, he gave Kevin Garnett and the Celtics extra motivation for this particular game. Garnett hasn’t played quite that hard in a while. There was an attack mode in his eyes that the Celtics wouldn’t have been able to win that game without.

Then there is the question of the terrible, and I do mean TERRIBLE, referring that took place in the last couple of minutes of the game. First off, Al Horford was given a couple of foul shots but he missed the first one…and to everyone’s surprise, he decided to make the 2nd shot.  On the Hawks 2nd possession, as Williams was inbounding the ball, a whistle was blown. This was triggered by Marquis Daniels, of the Celtics, fouling Al Horford.

After reviewing the NBA rulebook, a foul by a defensive team before the ball is inbounded in the final two minutes of a game (or during overtime) results in just one free throw attempt as well as the possession.

But what most people failed to remember is, the Celtics had home court. That is an extremely precious call that has to be handled delicately. A ref never wants to make that type of decision with the game on the line for the home team.

Maybe if the Hawks would have done what they were supposed to do at home and protected their ‘Highlight Factory,’ they wouldn’t have been in this situation. Many can argue that the Hawks were given plenty of calls themselves when in Atlanta. So I refuse to use referring as the reason for losing a game. Especially when the score is that close and you’re the away team. It’s almost guaranteed that you won’t get a call like that and the Hawks team should know that.

I don’t consider the Hawks team to be bad, but let’s be honest, their ownership and decision making is extremely poor. Whenever you decide to pay a player like Joe Johnson a $118 million contract, which everyone KNOWS he didn’t deserve, you open the door to the harshest of criticism.

There is no way the Atlanta Hawks will be able to win a championship with the ownership they have. Until they start to make some smart decisions, everything will be questioned. There’s a reason a player like Josh Smith, who ignites that team, didn’t want to be apart of the Hawks anymore. Who can blame him? They paid Joe Johnson money that he didn’t earn and no other team would have paid him. In what aspect has Johnson been a leader for the Hawks? Does that team follow what he does? If you answered no to either of those questions, then he doesn’t deserve ‘superstar’ money. End of story.

Another huge problem with the Hawks team is they are extremely inconsistent. This team has all the potential to go deep in the playoffs, but they continue to fall short. One night they beat the Miami Heat and the next they lose to the Cavs. Why can’t that team who beat the Heat show up night in and night out? There is no real game-plan with this team. If you ever watch them in a huddle, some aren’t even in the circle listening to the coach. It’s like they have no respect for each other and unfortunately that rubs off on the court. While each of them have their own talents you have to learn how to play cohesively in order for your team to succeed in the long run. Best example of that was the Miami Heat last season. All the talent in the league and still couldn’t win it all because they weren’t playing as a team.

I feel for Hawks fans, because they know their team has all the potential but can’t take the next step. That can be very frustrating to sit and watch this happen every year. I will say this though, when you are extra sensitive about your team, you give leeway for people to say harsh things because they know it bothers you.

Unfortunately for the Hawks, nothing will change unless the mentality of that organization starts down a different path. Until then, you can look for the Hawks to continue to make early exits in the playoffs. This team is too talented for this though, so Hawks fans should begin praying for different ownership and better decisions made on behalf of their team.

What Is Wrong With The New York Knicks??

LeBron James scored 32 points to lead the Heat and Carmelo Anthony scored 22 to lead the Knicks. (Barton Silverman/The New York Times)

Last night during the Knicks vs Heat game, we witnessed a New York team become deflated in the 2nd half. Miami Heat took a commanding 3-0 lead in the series and shot all hopes for a win by the Knicks, out the window.

The Knicks went into halftime with a 4 point lead, but they finished the half sluggish after having an 11 point lead and allowing Miami to go on a run. Coming back into the second half, it was obvious that Carmelo Anthony was tired. He just wasn’t operating the same int he 4th as he had been all game. LeBron got in foul trouble and had to sit out much of the 3rd, so he came back with fresh legs and rest on his side.

Watching the Knicks play, you see glimmers of hope that they might be able to pull out a win and then defeat happens. They just don’t have enough to beat stronger teams like the Heat. As good as Carmelo has been lately, he can’t do it by himself.

Then you have to address the Amar’e Stoudemire issue. Not only did he selfishly punch through glass and take himself out of the playoffs, this team has performed better with him on the bench. There is no doubt in my mind that if he wasn’t owed $60 million dollars that he would be on the trading block going into next season.

It also doesn’t help that the Knicks lost Iman Shumpert in Game 1 of this series. He had been performing at such a high level and elevating this team to a level they lacked since losing Jeremy Lin.

Going into this series, I’m pretty sure that no one was giving the Knicks a shot at winning and it’s easy to see why. They don’t have enough fire power, nor a big enough leader in Carmelo Anthony. As great of a player that he has been, he just isn’t on the same playing field as a LeBron James, Kevin Durant or Dwyane Wade. You have to be someone that is willing to lead your team and rev them up when things aren’t going the right way. I’ve yet to see him do that in his career. Carmelo is a player that goes out and plays his game and hopes that everyone around him is able to adjust. I never thought him and Amar’e would be a good fit together for the Knicks. There has always been an excuse as to why Carmelo hasn’t been ‘that guy,’ but what is really left. We’ve blamed the lack of talent in Denver and his head coach in New York, D’Antoni. There is no one or nothing else to blame for Carmelo.

At the end of the day, this Knicks current team just isn’t enough. I don’t see them going past the first round of the playoffs ever until certain changes are made. Maybe the Knicks organization will have to blow up this team to make it happen. I don’t see someone like Phil Jackson coming to coach this team and I believe Mike Woodson has done a good job thus far. Some say that the Knicks can only go as far as Carmelo Anthony takes them and I’m not so sure that’s true. Well, if it is true, then that means we have seen the highest point that the Knicks can go. Things have to change in New York and you can only hope that they make the proper adjustments going into the 2012-13 season.

What Was Amare Thinking??

After the Knicks vs Heat game last night, Amare Stoudemire punched a glass casing surrounding a fire extinguisher. (LYNNE SLADKY / THE ASSOCIATED PRESS)

Last night after the New York Knicks lost to the Miami Heat 104-94, Amare Stoudemire decided to punch a glass casing surrounding a fire extinguisher. The Knicks players suffered lacerations that required stitches and pretty much determined that we won’t see him anymore in the playoffs.

Stoudemire left the arena last night with his arm in a sling and his left hand heavily bandaged after being treated by paramedics and team doctors from both the Knicks and Heat.

After the game, Amare tweeted: “I am so mad at myself right now. I want to apologize to the fans and my team, not proud of my actions. headed home for a new start.”

Well, a fresh start to what exactly Amare?? By that selfish action you took, you’re now leaving your team a man down by your own accord. It’s not an injury you suffered during game play, instead it’s your doing. If you wanted an early start to the summer, you didn’t have to go that route.

Some say that Amare may have been frustrated with the amount of shot attempts — he had nine –even though he was able to score 18 points for the Knicks. At the end of the day, I believe he wanted the Knicks to be his team and in reality, it’s Carmelo Anthony’s.

Carmelo has more than proven that he is the face of the Knicks, his game play proves that. Once again Melo will be required to carry the team on his back through the playoffs. Pretty sure the Knicks have no chance at beating the Miami Heat in this series, but you have to hope they can steal one game at home in Madison Square Garden.

This action by Amare was completely selfish and I fully believe he lost the support of the New York fan base by acting this way. In no way can you respect someone that blatantly can’t control their actions and takes himself out of the playoffs.

Knicks center Tyson Chandler said: “He’s probably going to be out. I don’t know how bad it is. … Your emotions run high. In a split second, a decision can alter things. You can’t fault anybody. We’ve got to deal with the repercussions.”

I agree with Chandler here, yes emotions do run high but there is also something as doing too much and that’s what Amare did. You wanna be angry, go give a speech like Ray Edwards in the locker room or something. I actually consider what Stoudemire did as giving up and that is unacceptable in this level of play.

I am hoping that Carmelo comes out in Game 3 and wins it for the Knicks and the fans. That would be a thing of beauty because most know that Melo is the only one capable of delivering this.

If Amare wasn’t plagued with injuries and didn’t have $60 million still owed to him, I’m almost positive that the Knicks would be shipping him out of New York. There is no excuse for what he did last night.

Man up and take the loss…you move on and try to play better in game 3 for your TEAM. It seems the word ‘team’ is a definition Amare missed in grade school.
